Overview

Northeastern University offers leased housing in Midtown Manhattan, NYC, in partnership with Educational Housing Services (EHS), a non-profit organization that provides comfortable and secure residences for students needing short-term housing in New York City.  While EHS has multiple locations in the New York City area, the Midtown Manhattan building is known as the New Yorker Hotel.  Reservations, payment, preparation, move-in, and move-out procedures are coordinated by Northeastern University’s Network Housing & Relocation office, but you are encouraged to visit studenthousing.org/buildings/new-yorker to learn more about the resources, accommodations, and amenities provided by EHS.

Location

The New Yorker Hotel is a 43-story Art Deco hotel that opened in 1930 located across the street from Penn Station (including Long Island Rail Road, Amtrak, and Madison Square Garden) and a short walk to the A, C, and E subway lines.  In the heart of bustling Manhattan, the New Yorker Hotel is still a functioning hotel, but the floors owned by EHS are specifically for students needing short-term housing.

Application Process and Payments

How do I apply?
To inquire about our NY Housing, please contact Sonya Cottam at s.cottam@northeastern.edu. After completing this step, you can submit the Housing Application. Once we have received your application, a staff member will authorize you to deposit.

How much is the housing deposit?
The deposit is $200 per term you will be living in the housing, so most co-op students are paying $400 as their deposit. (For example, $200 deposit for Summer II and $200 for Fall). The deposit(s) will be applied to the total housing payment.

How will I be billed?
You will be billed to your NU account in the same manner as NU on-campus housing.

Can I transfer my on-campus housing deposit to the New York Housing deposit?
No, all NU Leased Housing deposits must be made through NUPAY. Your on-campus housing deposits will be refunded once you cancel with Housing Services – https://www.northeastern.edu/housing/cancellation-deadlines/.

If I decide not to live in the NU Leased Housing I applied for, or if I can’t get the co-op outside of Massachusetts that I wanted, do I still have to pay for the room?
To avoid paying housing fees, you must cancel your housing in writing with Network Housing & Relocation 45 days before the official start date of the co-op term. If you do not cancel within 45 days of the official start date of the co-op term, you will be responsible for ALL 26 weeks of payment.

Guest Policy

Please note that EHS enforces a strict guest policy.  You must sign in all overnight guests prior to their stay, and there is a $5.00 charge per night, which goes toward student programming.

Room and Building Amenities

Are the rooms furnished?
Yes. Each room has a twin-sized bed, desk, and dresser for each student. However, you are responsible for bringing your linens.

Is there a kitchen in the room?
No. Each room is equipped with a refrigerator, and a communal kitchen is available for all residents. The communal kitchen has sinks, convection ovens, stovetops, and microwave ovens. No cookware or utensils are provided.

Is there a bathroom in the room?
Yes, you will have a private bathroom.

Do I have to pay for cable or internet?
When you arrive, cable and internet are available in the room at no additional cost. All you need to bring is an Ethernet (CAT5) cord to hook up your computer.

Do I have to pay utilities?
No. Utilities are included in the cost of the room.

Who should I contact if something in the room is broken?
You should contact your residence staff. More information will be given to you upon check-in. If you are having trouble contacting your residence staff, e-mail NHR@northeastern.edu.

Is there laundry in the building?
Yes. The laundry room is located on the lower level of the building. The machines are card-operated.

Is there a fitness center?
Yes. The EHS fitness center is located on the 17th floor. A room key is required for entry.

Move-in/Move-out

Since co-op terms are back to back, early arrivals or late departures directly impact the move-in/move-out and schedule for the student living in the housing before or after you. They can be declined by the housing provider if there is not enough time to clean the rooms between students. If extenuating circumstances require you to move in early or late, contact Network Housing & Relocation so that we can work with you on arranging short-term accommodations.

Policies and Procedures

Is there anything I am not allowed to bring?
A list of prohibited items is available in the Arrival Information — Prepare For Your Arrival.

Who should I contact if something in my room is broken?
You should contact the EHS residence staff.

Who should I contact in an emergency?
In an emergency, you should call 911.

What is the guest policy?
Guest policies are stated in the Guest Policy.
