FAQs Related to Northeastern Leased Housing
How do I apply and secure my spot in the leased housing?
Students must first meet with a representative from Network Housing & Relocation to learn more about the process for securing housing in a leased property location. Once you have met with someone from NH&R, you can fill out the leased housing application for your desired leased property location. Please note that you must have your co-op or Semester-In start and end dates near-finalized prior to filling out the leased housing application. Following the application, you will submit a $200 deposit for each term (Fall, Spring, Summer I, or Summer II) for which you’d like to secure housing. This will ensure your leased housing reservation is held. Closer to your move-in date, you will receive move-in instructions via email. Please note that space is available in the leased properties on a first-come, first-served basis.
How do I submit my deposit for the leased housing?
The deposit is $200 per term you will be living in the housing, so most co-op students are paying $400 as their deposit. That deposit will be applied to the balance for housing. To submit the deposit, students should visit MyNortheastern, click on “Services & Links,” followed by “Student Financial Services,” then “Student Account, Payment and E-bill Information.” Once here, click “Make a Payment through NUPAY.” Students should then choose the appropriate housing deposit option based on their desired term(s) and locations.
How does billing work?
You will be billed for NU Leased housing directly to your student account, in a similar manner to university housing or tuition. Bills appear directly on your account about one to three weeks before the start of the term. If you have a partial stay within the above terms, you will be billed on a weekly basis. Weekly rates can be found on the city specific NU Leased Housing Page.
Can I transfer my on-campus housing deposit to a Beyond Boston Housing deposit?
Unfortunately, no. All NU Leased Housing deposits must be made through NUPAY. Your on-campus housing deposits will be refunded once you cancel with University Housing (by emailing housing@northeastern.edu).
Okay, I applied and submitted my deposit for leased housing. What happens next?
You’re all booked for the housing! The next communication from us will be a cancellation deadline reminder (about 2 months prior to the start of the term), a move-in date confirmation form (shortly after the cancellation deadline), and official move in instructions (about one month prior to the start of the term).
What happens if I place a deposit, but the housing was already full?
This likely wouldn’t happen. NH&R will be clear about availability in the leased housing and inform you if we’re full before you submit a deposit. However, in the even that you placed a deposit when the housing is full, you will be refunded. NH&R can then advise you in the process of finding housing elsewhere.
What happens if the housing if full, but I wanted a spot in the leased housing? Is there a waitlist?
NH&R does not advertise how many spots are open for the leased housing given it can tend to fill fairly quickly and change daily. Once you email/meet with a NH&R staff member, it will be clear how many spots are left once. If the housing is full, still submit your leased housing application. This will ensure you save your spot on the waitlist should there be any cancellations. NH&R will inform you about any cancellations, in the order in which the housing applications were received. If the housing remains full and you’re unable to secure a spot in the housing, we can advise you when searching for housing elsewhere.
What is the cancellation policy? If I decide not to live in the Beyond Boston Housing I applied for do I still have to pay for the room?
You must cancel your housing in writing to NH&R at least 45 days prior to the official start date of the co-op term to avoid paying any housing fees. For the Spring/Summer I term, this date is November 15th for Summer II/Fall, the date is May 15th. If you cancel in writing by the deadline, your deposit will be refunded as a credit on your student account. After the cancellation deadline, you forfeit your deposit, and the entire amount for the housing will be charged to your student account. See below for exceptions.
If my co-op gets cancelled and I’m no longer moving to a leased housing location, do I still have to pay for the housing?
No. If your co-op gets cancelled by your co-op employer, you will not need to pay for the housing, even if you cancel after the cancellation deadline. However, you will need to provide proof that your co-op has been cancelled from your employer or your co-op advisor to NH&R. Once you provide this proof, you will not be charged for the housing and your deposit will be refunded.
When can I move in? What if my co-op starts early, can I move in early?
The move-in date varies by term, but the earliest move-in date will be clear to you once you meet with a member of NH&R. Move-in dates are determined based on the official co-op start and end dates, which are determined by Employer Engagement and Career Design. Normally, students should not plan on being able to move in early given the cohort of students who are living in the leased housing in the prior term. It is the student’s responsibility to find and pay for temporary housing if their co-op begins early or they would like to move in early.
When do I have to move out by? If my co-op gets extended, can I extend by stay?
The move-out date varies by term, but the move-out date will be clear to you mid-way through the co-op term. Move-out dates are determined based on the official co-op start and end dates, which are determined by Employer Engagement and Career Design. Normally, students should not plan on being able to extend their stay and move out late given the cohort of students who will be moving in for the following co-op term. It is the student’s responsibility to find and pay for temporary housing if their co-op is extended. In rare circumstances, NH&R may be able to extend the student’s stay in the leased housing, but this depends on availability and demand of housing for the following co-op term, and students should not count on this being an option for them.
